When you plant Irises, scoop out two shallow holes and leave a ridge
between them. The iris rhizome sits on the ridge. and the
feeding roots are spread out in the holes on either side.
The iris plant travels in the direction of the growing end. Always
plant three rhizomes in a clump.
Planting Iris in clumps also promotes good air circulation, keeps leaf
fans growing outward for best appearance and health.
If you want to start iris from
seed. The best way is to freeze the seeds by putting them into
an ice-cube tray half filled with water. Freeze and then fill to
top with more water, leave for at least 4 weeks then plant the
ice-cubes.
Bearded Irises need sharp drainage. Beardless kinds (Japanese
Varieties) need plenty of moisture. They all do best in full
sun.
Irises need to be divided if over- crowed for the best blooms.
As soon as they are done flowering remove flower stalks. Keep
all dead foliage cleaned off.
Late summer is ideal time to divide.
